I’ve finally gotten around to uploading pics from the install I did a few weeks back in Palmerston North of the latest Acrylic series of my Welcome Swallows

Its the biggest set I’ve made to date – They were commissioned by a friend to go in her new kitchen, and I wanted them to really stand out against her feature wall.  As it turned out, the set was big enough to flow across two walls… I’m really stoked with the transition of the set from the overcast grey and onto the sunshine yellow.

Loving how they work with their drop shadows!

This set of swallows was cut from a gloss black acrylic, so the birds have a reflective surface if viewed from some angles as seen in a couple of the photos.  I also make these swallows out of mat black acrylic, gloss or mat white acrylic, and repurposed 33” vinyl records.  I can be contacted via my felt shop if you are interested in commissioning a set.

Last week I made up a new acrylic Swallow flock as a commission piece for a friends wall.  She lives out of Wellington and I can’t do the install for a few weeks, so in the meantime they needed a home that will both keep them safe during transport and has the option of display if she so wishes.  So here they are boxed up :

I like the way the drawers pull out like a specimen case, displaying the birds set inside on their pins they way butterflies and beetles used to be.  If they are completely pulled out and placed on their sides they also create individual shadow boxes.  Will post up pics of the whole set after they’re installed – Can’t wait to see them up on the wall!

Makertorium is on at Te Papa today.  My friend Matthew Pettengell kindly asked if i’d put up some of my new perspex swallow flock as a backdrop for his desks

Perspex swallows

These swallows are a new variation on my vinyl swallow flock i’ve had made through Makerspace… Really pleased with how they’ve turned out, i’m thinking on doing up a couple more sets in white and also in red next.

I’ll be adding them up on my Felt Sales shop in the next day or two, to be sold as installation sets, along with smaller individual swallows made into brooches.

If you are interested in an installation piece, or a commission work along these lines –  Maybe involving a different bird, butterfly or beetle I would love to hear from you! I can be contacted by email at : vincenteknight@gmail.com

Recently, I was given a stack of cast-off scratched, or just really bad House records – Yaya… Talk about score!

So here’s my newest work created using one of said records as the support :

I really wanna do a series of these now… Just got to find the time/ motivation between the moving and sorting out the mess which is my life of late.  They’re about all I’m up to creative wise – A bit of bright, slightly warped colour to take me away from it all.

I’m supposed to be working on a new flock of cut-out swallows as a commission for a close friend of mine.  But they’re tedious and slow going, cut out by hand and all… And I’m a bit over all the black dust created when sanding them at finishing stage.

So I took a wee break and re-purposed one of the extra records I’d picked up.  What with all the brightness I painted up for Magic beans, I thought I’d keep on the same theme and create a gathering of Fearsome Friends.

And ya know what?  I think the two fit really well together!  I cant wait to paint up a couple more …Once I’ve finished those Record Swallows and all!

Remember the Paper garden I pasted up in our little brick courtyard last year?       Well it was getting a bit weathered and old – I decided to scrub it off and start fresh.

Enter my new fascination with pitcher plants… I’m determined to hunt me down one of the Nepenthes variety.  I’ve got such a thing for hanging plants at the moment!

I learnt a bit from the orchid cut outs I put up last round – This time I went for brighter, denser colour. Plus I cut right down to the image edge rather than leaving a white border.  They def. jump out at you from the bricks way more.

So after the success of my Red onion jam I thought I’d add to my cupboard with some spiced Nectarine chutney.  I made up Armadillo labels up this time round.

Decided to add to the cartoon series inspired by these little labels too.  So here are my Armadillos with their stacked up chutney hoard :

And Llama Llama sauce for the Spiced plum rocket fuel I plan to make up tomorrow… As I’ve left it way too late tonight to start anything cooking now.

I like the simplicity of these pieces. With the handmade brown fibre paper showing through where I’ve left the Animals, borders and jars raw and unpainted.

I’ve been procrastinating over a commission piece I’m supposed to be working on …I’m a little burnt out after the last one – Because it was a rush job with a window of only 3 weeks, I ended up working both days and evenings to complete it on time.

So instead of painting New Zealand birds and bush, I’ve been watching The Mighty Boosh – Which I have somehow never seen before – And making Red Onion jam.

I seem to have used up all my blank sticker paper, so had to make do with labels made out of the brown tape I usually use to back my canvases and picture frames. That meant I needed to come up with a sort of longish image to fit the tape, rather than the swamp monsters I did last time.  I think Narwhal jam is totally awesome! No Narwhals were harmed in the making… Though my finger came out a little worse for wear, after a run in with the serrated knife on the very very last 1/2 onion, of the 2kgs of onions I chopped up. Ouch!

Luckily the deliciousness of this jammy sticky oniony process way out-weighed the damage… I’m thinking now I need an excuse to make these cute as and uber tasty looking bite size Brie pops. Or maybe I should just go all out and bake a whole brie wheel and eat it with fresh baguette instead!?!

I spent my Thursday evening last week making these basic papercuts to use under blacklight for my brothers housewarming.  Up until now, I have usually made flocks of birds for when making decorations, but as Duncs already has a collection of prototype birds from my vinyl swallow flock, I thought I’d try something different.

I love what you can do with white A4 paper, a pair of scissors and a uv light tube!

Sorry for the graininess again – Only had iphone with, rather than d’s nice cannon.

But I’m really pleased with how they turned out… I kinda love making papercut decorations *I think my friends should have more parties, so I can make more!!!

Ooh my little pink orchid painting is currently up on Felt’s homepage this week :

Lately Felt has been great to me, sending through lots of surprise emails notifying me that I’ve sold paintings and even a couple of my newer swallow brooches.

Its always a nice feeling to know there is someone else out there that also loves those pieces of work too.  Yay. Thanks Felt… And all the lovely people who use this site!
